Say hi: matt@mjwest.co
With over 20 years experience in the creative industry, my time has covered typography, brand design, editorial design, 2D animation and motion graphics, and filmmaking – writing concepts and directing film shoots around the world for a variety of clients.
I have worked for a number of creative agencies in full time positions – lead designer, design director, producer, film director, editor and creative director. Each role has always had the same focus, to create engaging work for the client. And each role has either been me working hands on, or directing and managing a team.
During my time freelancing, I have worked with clients directly (forming my own teams in a kind of agency set up), as well as within production companies, ad agencies and design studios. With extensive experience in both graphic design and video production, I have always been a creative who moves across disciplines, and that flexibility and mixture of projects is what still drives me.
My work has proudly gained recognition across design and film. After creating a brand and promotional editorial designs for a paper company, I was awarded a membership at the International Society of Typographic Designers, a membership only given on the merit of work. And I have enjoyed my short films featuring in film festivals, with cinema screenings – always a great honour.
Over the years I have created brands and sub-brands for names such as, Primark, Samsung and EE, and I have worked on content generation projects for Aston Martin, creating a brand film for one of the GT3 racing teams, writing and directing a Christmas campaign, with social shorts for Cath Kidston, and China World, a lifestyle and business complex that I have directed a promo campaign on location in Beijing.
Away from commercial work, my love of creative endeavours continues into the art space where I shoot photographic portraits in a very unique style. I also put some focus into running a men`s mental health awareness campaign – this is built around the idea of, creativity being used to help people process and express their thoughts. Something I am very proud of.
